THE HISTORY DESK / PLAYER GUIDE

How to play Eraly Online.
Make every guess count.

A practical guide to our independent Daily and Endless Practice: how to enter a year, read your score, and keep a run going.

Choose the right game

Our two Practice modes and the separately hosted Original Daily are different games. Their questions, scores and saves do not carry over.

OUR EDITION / DAILY

Daily Practice

Play seven questions with 25 seconds each. The maximum is 700 points. The repeatable selection follows your browser's local date.

Start Daily Practice

OUR EDITION / ENDLESS

Endless Practice

Start with three lives and build streaks. The pool is finite: up to 40 questions, with no repeats within a run.

SEPARATE / ORIGINAL

Original Daily

Select Original Daily in the game panel to load the separately hosted game from eraly.io. Its rules and storage are independent of Practice.

FIRST RUN

From question to reveal

In our Practice modes, you can pause, look at the source and learn from each answer.

  1. 01

Choose a Practice mode and start

Select Daily Practice for a seven-question round, or Endless Practice for a lives-and-streak challenge. Press Start to see your first event.

  2. 02

    Place the event in time

Enter a whole-number CE year from 1 through the current year. Submit with Guess year or Enter before time runs out. If a historical-anchor hint is shown, open it for a clue.

  3. 03

Read the answer and follow its source

The reveal compares your guess with the answer and explains the score. Open the linked historical source for context; choose Next moment when ready.

  4. 04

Pause or resume on your terms

Use Pause during a question. Practice also pauses when you leave the tab or change modes. When browser storage is available, Practice progress is saved on this device; Original Daily has its own storage.

OUR PRACTICE RULES

How Practice scoring works

The same base score is used in both Practice modes. Endless then applies its own bonus and multiplier.

Base points for an answered Practice question
ResultPointsWhat it means
Exact100The correct year
Very close85Small error
Close60Near the event
Approximate35A broader estimate
Distant15Further away
Attempt5Outside the other bands
Timeout0No answer before the timer ended

Why the year matters

The allowable error is wider for older events. As a worked example using 2026 as the current year, guessing 1810 for an event in 1800 earns 85 base points; guessing 2010 for an event in 2020 earns 60. The limits depend on the current year, so the example's bands can change over time.

Daily adds seven base scores, for a maximum of 700. A timeout scores zero; an answer submitted in time receives at least five base points. See Practice scoring on the game page.

These figures describe our Practice game, not Original Daily's scoring.

OUR EDITION / ENDLESS

Protect lives. Build a streak.

Endless Practice draws from the same finite bank as Daily Practice, while adding lives, exact-answer bonuses and a shorter clock.

  1. 01

Keep each answer above the life-loss line

You start with three lives. An answer worth fewer than 30 base points costs one life, so the 35-point band survives while a 15-point answer or a timeout does not.

  2. 02

    Connect close answers

Each answer worth at least 60 base points extends the streak. Three, six and nine consecutive qualifying answers activate ×2, ×3 and ×4 respectively. An answer below 60 resets the streak.

  3. 03

    Use exact answers to recover

An exact answer adds 25 points before the multiplier. Every two exact answers can restore one life, up to five lives. The run ends when the last life is lost or the 40-question pool is exhausted.

  4. 04

    Expect the clock to tighten

Endless begins at 25 seconds per question. The time limit decreases by two seconds every ten questions, down to a 12-second floor.

FIELD NOTES

A better way to estimate

Learn the sequence of events as well as individual years.

01 / ORIENT

Find an anchor

Place the event next to a year you already know. Is it before or after a major discovery, political change or technological milestone?

02 / NARROW

Use the clue

Identify a century first, then refine it. On an unfamiliar event, use the available historical-anchor hint rather than losing all your time.

03 / LEARN

Review the source

After the reveal, check the explanation and source. At the end of a Practice run, review your answers to see which periods need work.
